Solo ads
Buying solo ads: marketplace versus buying direct
The same email, bought two ways, with different things to fall back on.
You can buy a solo ad by messaging a seller directly, or through a marketplace where sellers list publicly. The email that goes out can be identical. What differs is what you know beforehand and what exists if the order goes badly.
| Question | Marketplace | Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Seller history | Public: ratings, repeat orders, buyer-reported sales | Whatever the seller shows you |
| Traffic country | Published on the listing | You have to ask, and trust the answer |
| Automated clicks | Filtered by the platform before delivery | Your problem, after the fact |
| Smallest order | A listed lot at a listed price | Whatever the seller agrees to |
| If delivery is short | A process that exists whether or not the seller likes it | A conversation, and no third party |
| Price | Listed, comparable across sellers | Negotiable, and not comparable to anything |
Be clear about what a marketplace is not
It is not an escrow service. The marketplace we use states plainly that it provides no financial or escrow services, and treating it as if it held your money for you is the wrong mental model. What it does provide is public history that a seller cannot edit, and click filtering applied before the order is delivered.
That distinction matters when something goes wrong. You are not appealing to a bank. You are dealing with a seller whose public record follows them to the next buyer, which is a weaker guarantee than escrow and a much stronger one than a private message thread.
When direct is the better choice
When you already know the seller, when the list is genuinely specific to your topic and not represented on any marketplace, or when you are buying enough volume that the terms are worth negotiating. In all three cases you are trading verification for something concrete. The mistake is trading it for nothing, which is what buying from a stranger in a group chat amounts to.
What we do
First order with any new seller goes through the marketplace, because the profile is worth more than the small price difference. If the seller performs and the relationship lasts, direct becomes a reasonable conversation. Not before.
